October 28, 2025 – The “Support” in Supportive Housing

On October 28, Housing for New Hope hosted a webinar to share how to build trusting relationships with participants, motivate them to set and achieve their goals, encourage them through challenges, and connect them with the resources they need to stay housed for the long haul. Here are the key takeaways with information on Housing for New Hope’s programs and resources.

Supportive Housing Programs

  • Our Community-Based Supportive Housing program partners with 50+ landlords across Durham and surrounding counties to offer safe, affordable housing options for people who need both short and long-term help including housing navigation, financial assistance, home essentials, and the breadth of support our dedicated staff provides.
  • Our Campus-Based Supportive Housing program has on-site Housing Stability Coordinators who foster a strong community for residents who have often experienced chronic homelessness or have a disabling condition and need long-term support. These folks lease directly from HNH at our Andover or Williams Square campuses.

Challenges & Transitions

  • Participants often face complex barriers, including severe and persistent mental health conditions and substance use disorders, affecting over 60% of the folks we serve. Transitioning from homelessness to housing requires relearning daily living skills, adjusting to new environments, navigating old and new relationships, and more.
  • Housing Stability Coordinators provide personalized support connecting participants with resources like medical care and disability benefits, navigating complex systems, and building relationships within their new community.
  • Peer Support Specialists are individuals with lived experience who offer deeper engagement, complement the work of Coordinators, and motivate participants to stay on track.
