Recognizing Direct Support Professionals and Their Impact
September 11th, 2026
Autism Society of North Carolina Communications
September 13-19, 2026, is National Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week, and it’s a time to celebrate the dedicated professionals who make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they support every day.
At the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC), we are deeply grateful for the compassion, commitment, and expertise our DSPs bring to the autistic children, adults, and families they serve across the state. As we recognize their contributions this week, we’re proud to share just a few reflections from those whose lives have been touched by their care and support.
Amber is so much more than a DSP—she is a leader, a guide, a true friend, and a shield in times of need. My daughter waits eagerly every morning just to see what the day holds for them together. Amber has guided her toward greater independence, encouraging her to make decisions for herself while holding high expectations grounded in compassion and deep understanding of every challenge. Amber’s love, generosity, and joyful spirit are true gifts not only to my daughter, but to our entire family. She brings a light that brightens even the most difficult days, and her devoted care means the world to us.
It takes my son a very long time to warm up to someone new. One slip-up and you’ve got to start all over again. Martin has a great sense of humor and is patient, flexible, and open to learning about my son and his interests. They both enjoy fire stations, dump trucks, trains, and the rock quarry. They have a great time together!
Kaylie consistently goes the extra mile for her buddies, taking the time to learn about their unique interests, strengths, and support needs and finding creative ways to incorporate those interests into meaningful activities that work toward their goals. Whether she’s throwing on a bathing suit to go swimming, making bracelets alongside her buddy for his small business, spending countless hours exploring the library, or heading out for walk after walk, Kaylie meets her buddies where they are and genuinely immerses herself in the things that matter to them.
Marc has been my son’s DSP for 12 years and shows up seven days a week! Marc is very reliable, dependable, and respectful. He has become a big part of our family! We’re very thankful for him and honestly wouldn’t know what to do without him. I’m grateful for his continued support and dedication!
Feagin is such a light! She spreads joy everywhere she goes and has made a lasting impact on the clients she serves. Feagin sees no limits and is always the first one in line to advocate for her clients to follow their dreams.

Tristian provides outstanding support to the many individuals served through the adult program and throughout the community. He actively creates meaningful opportunities for members to engage in volunteer service, including partnerships with organizations such as Meals on Wheels, the Ronald McDonald House, and local thrift stores. Through these experiences, Tristian helps individuals build valuable life skills, develop confidence, and strengthen their connections within the community. His dedication, mentorship, and commitment to community inclusion make a significant impact on the lives of those he serves.
