Kramden Recipient Connects Others to Tech Resources

Kramden strives to provide more than a computer through our programs. We aim to build lasting relationships within our community, from providing adults and students with devices, to tech support for all our recipients, and holding a variety of digital skills classes and workshops all over NC.
It is especially rewarding when a client becomes an ambassador for Kramden in their own community. Sandra Ruiz-Davila first came to Kramden in need of a laptop. Sandra was a student at El Refugio and needed a computer to complete her course work.
“Until then, I only had a very old one that I had brought with me from my home island, Puerto Rico,” she told Kramden. “Later, when my son started college, he was able to use that same computer. That was a huge financial relief for me, as I didn’t have to worry about buying a new one at the time.”
Sandra’s experience with Kramden made her aware of the digital divide that students face, especially immigrants like her and her family.
“Having access to tools like a computer provides a sense of pride and dignity. Not having to depend on favors or public resources every time a child needs to study reinforces family autonomy.”
Sandra now works for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and supports more than 500 students and 108 adults with resources including devices from Kramden.
“This program increases access to education, as many students struggle to complete assignments or attend virtual classes due to the lack of appropriate equipment. After receiving a laptop, they can connect to classes, do research, use educational platforms, and stay academically up to date.”
Parents in the program also benefit from access to devices, Sandra says: “ Many parents can use the devices to learn English, search for jobs, or connect with community resources.”
Sandra’s story serves as an example of what we hope to accomplish through our programs at Kramden.
