Cecilia Holden Challenges Nash Community College Graduates to Lead, Persevere, and Pay It Forward

myFutureNC President and CEO Cecilia Holden delivered the commencement address to Nash Community College’s Class of 2026, encouraging graduates to embrace resilience, lifelong learning, and service to others as they begin their next chapter.

Speaking to 544 graduates across two ceremonies, Holden reminded students that their accomplishments represent more than personal success — they are part of North Carolina’s larger effort to build a stronger, more educated workforce. She highlighted the state’s goal of ensuring two million North Carolinians ages 25–44 hold a high-quality credential or degree by 2030 and emphasized the important role community colleges play in reaching that milestone.

Throughout her remarks, Holden shared powerful stories of perseverance from Nash Community College graduates, including Veronica, who returned to school nearly 20 years after earning her GED, and Shian, a Nash Early College student who found confidence through campus leadership and involvement. Their journeys, Holden said, reflect the determination and courage shared by graduates across the class.

Holden also offered graduates practical advice for life and career success, encouraging them to lead with kindness, remain solution-oriented, think carefully before posting online, and “chase excellence” rather than titles or money.

Closing her speech, Holden challenged graduates to use their education to uplift others and create opportunities in their communities.

“The ripple effect starts with you—right here, right now,” Holden said as she congratulated the Class of 2026.
