Basil Oxymel

This flavorful, aromatic infusion is a traditional immune-supporting herbal tonic as well as a versatile ingredient for drinks and dressings. You can try different herbs depending on flavor preference and health benefits — we went with basil to capture the tastes of summer!

INGREDIENTS & MATERIALS

  • 1/2 C. Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 C. Fresh basil leaves, packed
  • 1 glass pint jar with lid
  • Remove stems from basil, roughly chop or gently bruise leaves to bring out aromas, then place in the jar.
  • In a separate container, mix the apple cider vinegar and honey until combined, then pour into jar until basil is fully covered, adding more vinegar if needed.
  • Secure the lid and allow the jar to sit in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks, gentle shaking or flipping the jar every day or so.
  • Strain the mixture into a bowl using a mesh strainer or cheesecloth so the leaves are removed. Clean the jar then place the remaining liquid back in the jar and store at room temperature for 6 months – 1 year or in the refrigerator.
  • Enjoy 1-2 tsp. daily for general wellness or add to mixed drinks or salad dressings.
